The ICC Commission Consults with Visit Britain
The London ICC Commission Chairman, Gerry Acher, met with VisitBritain on
November 15, 2004.
VisitBritain markets Britain to the rest of the world and they
market England to the British. Their mission is to build the value of tourism
by creating world class destination brands and marketing campaigns. They also
build partnerships with other organisations which have a stake in British and
English tourism.
The objective of the meeting was to include the unique views of the VisitBritain
team in the ICC Commission’s consultation process. The Commission is tasked
with exploring how a new London ICC would affect London as well as the greater
UK, and VisitBritain’s experience in marketing London and the UK as a
destination for business tourism among other things was invaluable.
An overview of the Commission’s research to date was provided, particularly
focusing on initial findings from the Demand Study being performed by a team at
Grant Thornton. New business tourism statistics for London were presented and a
series of questions was discussed, including:
1) How do we get support for the convention center from outside of London?
2) How do we best use the convention market in London as a gateway to the rest
of the UK?
3) What challenges and/ or benefits would a London ICC present to Visit
Britain, in terms of its business tourism marketing?
VisitBritain’s feedback will be incorporated into the Commission’s final report
to the Mayor of London.
