London ICC Mayoral Commission
welcomes Olympic decision
Gerry Acher, chair of the Mayoral Commission into a London International Convention Centre has welcomed the decision to hold the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
“In every way, the decision is a great one for London,” said Gerry Acher.
”For the next seven years it will bring a focus upon London that will make it the centre of world attention. There will be a tremendous revival for an underdeveloped part of London and we will have sporting facilities that rival any in the world.
“It is vital that we capitalise on all ancillary benefits that the Games could bring to London. One of these, and arguably the most important, would be business tourism. We are factoring in this important win into our strategic thinking as we finalise our report that will be presented to the Mayor and the LDA later this summer,” said Gerry Acher.
Mr Acher said that the final stage of the report that examined the competitiveness of London as a business tourism location compared to other capital cities was now being concluded.
Editor’s Note
The London Development Agency (LDA), under the auspices of the Mayor of London, set up the Mayoral Commission to assess the feasibility of developing an International Convention Centre. It is an independent body, made up of representatives from the public and private sectors, representing a cross-section of London’s tourism, hospitality and business leaders.
Gerry Acher CBE LVO is vice-chairman of London First and a non-executive director of Camelot. He is former senior London partner of international accountants KPMG.
