Barry Cleverdon joins London ICC Commission

Barry Cleverdon OBE, former chief executive of The NEC Group that includes Birmingham’s International Convention Centre and the National Exhibition Centre, has been appointed to the London Mayoral Commission examining the potential for an International Convention Centre in London.

Barry Cleverdon was appointed chief executive of The NEC Group in 1995. The facilities and services of the group are among Europe’s market leaders in exhibitions, conferences, entertainment and sport, staging over 1700 events annually. The NEC is Europe’s busiest multi-facility complex also containing the NEC Arena and the National Indoor Arena (NIA).

Before being appointed chief executive Barry Cleverdon was general manager of the ICC, Symphony Hall and the NIA. He was instrumental in setting new standards for the UK conference industry when the ICC opened in 1991 and the award winning venues have since gone from strength to strength.

Barry was awarded the OBE in 2000 for services to West Midlands industry and presented with an honorary doctorate from Birmingham University in 2004.

Gerry Acher, chairman of the Commission said: “Barry has exceptional experience of leading the group that has an outstanding track record in running both an international conference centre and one of Europe’s premier exhibition locations. His knowledge and experience will be invaluable to the Commission. His expertise will ideally complement the specialisms of other members of the Commission”.
