Gerry Acher, chairman of the Mayoral Commission on a London International Convention Centre received a 400 name petition supporting an ICC at the recent National Meetings Week exhibition.

The petition, arranged by leading trade journal Meetings and Incentive Travel organisers of the exhibition, was signed by leading figures from sectors interested in the conference world. Not only was the petition signed by representatives of the meetings and conventions business, but it was also signed by many representatives of the travel, hospitality and hotel industries and by several representatives of existing UK conference centres.

Tony Rogers, executive director of the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO), said: "This petition provides very significant tangible evidence of the widespread support from across the UK conference industry for a purpose built ICC in London."

Gerry Acher, who received the petition on behalf of London Mayor Ken Livingstone, said, "A petition such as this is concrete evidence of the very strong support that all elements of the UK conference and associated industries feel for the creation of a London ICC. Our commission still has much work to do in examining the demand, funding and economic aspects of a London ICC, but this petition clearly demonstrates the strength of support for an ICC from the conference world."
